In South Africa it is common to drink rooibos tea without milk, but instead with a slice of lemon and sugar or honey to sweeten. The flavor of rooibos tea is often described as being naturally sweet (without sugar added) and slightly nutty. Rooibos can be prepared in the same manner as black tea, and this is the most common method. Unlike black tea, however, rooibos does not become bitter when steeped for a long time. Rooibos tea is a reddish brown color, explaining why rooibos is sometimes referred to as "red tea". Rooibos is becoming more popular in Western countries particularly among health-conscious consumers, due to its high level of antioxidants and lack of caffeine. Rooibos is purported to assist with nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems. Traditional medicinal uses of rooibos in South Africa include alleviating infantile colic, allergies, asthma and dermatological problems. |

Yerba Mate is a stimulating, naturally-caffeinated tea which shares many of the same vitamins, minerals, and compounds found in green teas. Used in South America much like Coffee is used in the States but without the negative side effects associated with Coffee as some report. Try an alternative to your morning pick up, from another culture. Preparation: If you do not have a traditional gourd to prepare your yerba mate, you can use a coffee maker or tea ball. Quantity used per cup is about the same as coffee. Normally the gourd is filled 1/2 way up with yerba and then a channel is formed on the side to pour the water into. You add just enough water to wet the yerba up to the top of the cup. Let it set and continue to add water until it has been all soaked up. Then use a bombilla or filtered straw to drink the yerba. As I said, if you don't have the traditional preparation material, you can use a coffee maker or tea ball. Just let it steep longer than you would normally with coffee. |

The Mayan Indians utilized the leaves of the Turnera diffusa plant by making them into a drink and adding sugar to sweeten it. Then it was drunk for its power to enhance lovemaking. It was also consumed in some Latin American countries as a dietary supplement. For medical purposes, in addition to being utilized as an aphrodisiac and for treating conditions related to the reproductive organs, Turnera diffusa has been used as an anti depressant, cough suppressant, diuretic, laxative, and as a tonic. Other medical applications include being used to treat asthma, bronchitis, neurosis, and gastrointestinal problems such as dysentery. It can also relieve or reduce headaches. Damiana can even be smoked alone or added as an ingredient for a smoke blend. The flavor and aroma somewhat like lemon produce a pleasant smoke and can be very relaxing. |
