Salvia Divinorum is a species of sage (the genus
Salvia). There are approximately 1000 species of sage worldwide,
but Salvia divinorum is the only vision-inducing species known.
Salvia is a member of a very large family of plants known as the
Labiatae. Because mint is a well-known member of this family, it
is sometimes referred to as the mint family. Salvia divinorum makes a beautiful house plant, and it
can be grown just for that reason, but most people who grow this
plant are interested in its fascinating psychoactive effects.
The botanical name Salvia divinorum means "Sage of the
Diviners." Under the right conditions, taken in the right way,
Salvia produces a unique state of "divine inebriation." For
hundreds of years, it has been used in religious and healing
ceremonies by the Mazatec Indians, who live in the province of
Oaxaca, in Mexico. Salvia contains a chemical substance called salvinorin
A (often referred to just as salvinorin). Salvinorin is
responsible for Salvia's mind-altering effects. It is not
chemically related to any other psychoactive drug. Unlike most
visionary compounds, it is not an alkaloid. No one has ever died from a salvia overdose.
Salvia is not a stimulant, it is not a sedative, it is
not a narcotic, it is not a tranquilizer. SALVIA IS NOT A PARTY DRUG This is important to
understand. Salvia is not a party drug in the way that alcohol
and stimulants can be. If you try to party with Salvia you
probably will not have a good experience. It's use is more
spiritual in nature. In many ways Salvia divinorum is in a class by itself.
No other herb or drug is like it. The pharmacologica and
physiological make up of Salvinorin A is unlike any other
chemical known. It is misleading to compare it to other
substances. It is a truly unique visionary herb. It is an herb with a long tradition of sacred use. It
is useful for deep meditation. It is best taken in a quiet,
nearly darkroom; either alone, or with one or two good friends
present. It should be taken either in silence or (sometimes)
with soft pleasant music playing. You will probably not want to
be touched or talked to. Outside interactions most likely will
be annoying or distracting.
At present, neither Salvia
divinorum nor its active principal, Salvinorin A, are controlled
substances anywhere in the world

Salvia Divinorum and the latest legal controversy regarding the plant.
These are my thoughts on the legal matter concerning Salvia
divinorum, free use and the law.
I would like to say first that if Salvia divinorum ever becomes illegal in
the US we will concur completely with any laws set forth to control it.
Please act responsibly and maturely.
A person can drink moderately and have a decent time without excess. Have
you noticed how much harm is being done when people drink yet the legal
system has not abolished alcohol. On the other hand some amount of control
has been set forth to protect us from people who do drink to much. Thank
God. Any reasonable person can see that an aggressive amount of control is
in effect and necessary for alcohol consumption.
There are many plants like salvia divinorum that have no legal control
placed upon them and an amount of trust is in effect placed upon you as a
result of this. Our Aussie friends in Australia have evidently pushed the
envelope and gone to far or they may claim to have a controlling government.
Lets not let the law here in the USA make such a statement about us. Or put
our government in the position to do so.
Let us show the world and our Government, especially now, that yes, there is
room for error but because we are mature enough our government has no need
to intervene as Australia was forced to do.
Now it is in your hands whether or not any further control is necessary. The
legal system works to protect us from idiots not control us.
Alcohol causes a lot of harm to us emotionally and physically, indirectly
and directly. These effects no matter how much I disagree with them are left
up to us. We can have them in our life or not have them.
Unlike Alcohol the effects of Salvia are not known and the effects are
strong. For all we know we could be harming our self beyond repair. Of
course there has been no record of any mental or physical side effects when
used by the Indians of Mexico for hundreds of years now but do you have
faith in that alone.
The point is if the legal (criminal)system or FDA (civil) exerts some amount
of control on Salvia for further study I am sure it is just to be on the
safe side. For the safety of all. "E Pluribus Unum" ya know. Stop rebelling
and grow up. Without this control what would happen? Remember the Los
Angeles Riots. There are a lot of immature and irresponsible people in this
world just waiting to burst out. My God people, make a difference, but not
like that.
Do what you want with what the law allows and don't abuse the legal system.
The rules are there for our own protection. That is the freedom we can work
for.
